Valentine Week : A Celebration of Love Each Day

Valentine's Day, which is observed on 14th February of every year, is a day for love, and for love and appreciation. Although today is considered a romantic day dedicated to gifts, chocolates, and so forth it is more mysterious and equally interesting to the contemporary person.

14th February: The History of Valentine's Day

Did you know that the history of Valentine's Day goes back over 2,000 years? Historians assume that holiday is based on the Roman antiquity.

  • In 5th century BC Pope Gelasius I proclaimed 14th February to be St. Valentine's Day, to this day, exactly who St. Valentine was, historians can only guess.
  • One popular legend suggests that Valentine was a priest in third-century Rome who secretly performed marriages for soldiers despite Emperor Claudius II's ban. When the emperor found out, he had Valentine been imprisoned and subsequently killed.
  • Another version of the story tells of a Christian priest named Valentine who was imprisoned for helping Christians escape Roman persecution. While in jail, he fell in love with the jailer's daughter and sent her letters signed, “From Your Valentine”—a phrase we still use today.

The association of Valentine's Day with romance became widespread in the 14th century when English poet Geoffrey Chaucer wrote about it in his poem:

"For this was sent on St. Valentine's Day, When every fowl comes here to choose his mate."

This mention of birds selecting mates in mid-February spawned the legend of Valentine's Day as the day of love and courtship.

By the 15th century, exchanging love letters on Valentine's Day became a common practice. One of the earliest known written Valentines was a poem sent by Charles, Duke of Orleans, to his wife while he was imprisoned in the Tower of London in 1415.

The Evolution of Valentine's Day Traditions

With the passage of time, Valentine's Day has become a mass holiday that comes with cards, chocolates and flowers:.

  • In 1840, mass-produced Valentine's Day cards became popular, thanks to Esther Howland, who is now known as the Mother of the American Valentine.
  • The heart-shaped chocolates were first promoted by the Cadbury Company in 1861.
  • The popular conversation heart candies were created in 1866.
  • Up to 145 million Valentine's Day cards and 250 million Roses now are traded every year!
